Subsurface structure of magmatic segments during continental breakup: Perspectives from a gravity data analysis along the Main Ethiopian Rift

چکیده

In magma-rich continental rifts, extension is commonly localized as dike injection in discrete magmatic segments which appear from surface geology to mimic the along-axis segmentation of ocean ridges. However, subsurface morphology these zones magma unclear, and whether at what depth range they remain with subvolcanic plumbing systems not fully understood. addition, relationship between tectonic faulting also debated. The Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) provides a unique opportunity examine spatial scale, locus, geometries localization active rifts. We examined variations structure crust MER using gravity data better understand pattern injection. Results our study reveal Bouguer highs centers distinct right-stepping (Aluto, Gedemsa, Boseti), interpreted locus mafic intrusions. show that boundary each segment observed down depths ?20 km, suggesting have least mid-crust. Additionally, incorporating fault network shows densest occurs tips shown by highs. This similar axial slow ultra-slow spreading ridges suggests strong deformation mechanism, accommodating dominating towards ends. rift margin volcanic (Siltie Debrezeit, Yerer Tulu, Galema) are inferred bandpass anomaly maps, supported petrologic evidence, implies has occurred near flanks.

Continental rift

The azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyanus), has long presented a puzzle for biologists. The naturalist Alfred Wallace was one of the first to consider it. The puzzle lies in its extraordinary distribution. It exists in two distinct locations: Iberia and eastern Asia, 9,000 kilometres apart. Two alternative theories have been put forward to explain this curious distribution. The first proposes t...

The initiation of segmented buoyancy-driven melting during continental breakup

Melting of the mantle during continental breakup leads to magmatic intrusion and volcanism, yet our understanding of the location and dominant mechanisms of melt generation in rifting environments is impeded by a paucity of direct observations of mantle melting. It is unclear when during the rifting process the segmented nature of magma supply typical of seafloor spreading initiates. Here, we u...

Characterization of Water Level Variability of the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes

In this paper, the water level fluctuations of eight Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes were analyzed for their hydrological stability in terms of water level dynamics and their controlling factors. Long-term water balances and morphological nature of the lakes were used as bases for the analyses. Pettit’s homogeneity test and Mann–Kendall trend analysis were applied to test temporal variations of the...

Mantle thermal structure and active upwelling during continental breakup in the North Atlantic

Seismic reflection and refraction data acquired on four transects spanning the Southeast Greenland rifted margin and Greenland^Iceland Ridge (GIR) provide new constraints on mantle thermal structure and melting processes during continental breakup in the North Atlantic. Maximum igneous crustal thickness varies along the margin from s 30 km in the near-hotspot zone (6 500 km from the hotspot tra...
